ARCHAVE: A Virtual Environment for Archaeological Research
نویسندگان
چکیده
We have developed a software system for evaluating the merits of several virtual environments for archaeological tasks. The ARCHAVE system, developed at the SHAPE lab at Brown University, presents archaeological excavation data and site information via a virtual reality interface. These data come from the Brown University Great Temple excavations in Petra, Jordan [1]. As Bowman proposes [2], we are designing several user studies that utilize the following virtual environments: a Cave, Barco Baron table, head-mounted display and the desktop (see accompanying video and Fig. 1), to evaluate the hypothesis that virtual reality is useful for this kind of research. This type of study is one of the “Hot open challenges” in VR research [3].

ARCHAVE: A virtual reality interface for archaeological 3D GIS
Archaeological researchers often use Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for the analysis of their findings because of the capabilities of these systems to generate spatial correlations and visualize large amounts of data. These very features become a problem when the information is not confined to a 2D plane but has a strong 3D character. In that case, the use of an adequate user interface ...
متن کاملARCHAVE: A VR Interface for Archaeological Research
The goal for this semester was to finalize a first testable version of the system so we could bring a group of archaeologists to try the system in a controlled experiment. This would give us a first evaluation of how we are doing in designing this new research tool. There were two main reasons why this was not accomplished. The first one, and most important, the creation of the user interface, ...
متن کاملThe Lava Project: a Service Based Approach to Supporting Exploratory Learning
This paper introduces the Laconia Acropolis Virtual Archaeology project (LAVA), a co-operative archaeological learning environment that has been developed to address the need for students to be able to engage with realistic archaeological excavation scenarios. The practice of fieldwork lies at the heart of archaeology yet poses particular problems for the learning of the subject. The opportunit...
متن کاملA fully immersive virtual model to explore archaeological sites
In this work we present the methodological approach applied to develop a fully immersive and interactive virtual environment that simulates an archaeological site located in Sao Paulo (Brazil). To create a realistic 3D space, which would be relevant for research through a cyber-archeology exploration, laser scanners and photometry were used for collecting 3D point clouds data from the physical....
متن کاملVirtual Reality User Interfaces for the Effective Exploration and Presentation of Archaeological Sites
Archaeological virtual environments are computerised simulations allowing the study and exploration of archaeological sites. For architecture students and researchers at the University of Auckland they provide several advantages compared to traditional methods of study and exploration such as site visits, illustrations and books. Advantages include that there is no physical travel required, gre...
